The Art Institute of Chicago South Garden: A Wedding Photo Guide
The single most-used portrait stop in our portfolio, and for good reason. As wedding videographers who’ve shot here more than almost anywhere else in the city, here’s what to know before adding it to your timeline.
Why the South Garden Works
Tucked away from the hustle of Michigan Avenue, the South Garden is surrounded by rows of trees, ivy-covered walls, stone pathways, and a fountain at its center. The Art Institute itself has stood at this location since 1893 (founded in 1879), and that classic stone architecture pairs naturally with the garden’s greenery, the trees give depth, the ivy adds texture, and the result photographs beautifully whether a couple is in a modern gown or a classic black-tie look.

Access and Timing
The garden typically opens with the museum and closes about half an hour before it does, and it can close entirely during high-traffic city events like Lollapalooza or F1 weekend. Check the museum’s own channels ahead of a session if your date falls near a major event.
Real Weddings We’ve Filmed Here
We’ve used the South Garden for Lauren & Andy, Gina & Benjamin, Chelsea & Kevin, Mandy & James, and Lauren & Ryan, couples marrying everywhere from The Drake to the Lyric Opera House to St. Michael’s in Old Town. It’s proof the South Garden isn’t tied to any one ceremony or reception venue; it works as a portrait stop no matter where your day starts or ends.
South Garden FAQ
Do you need a permit to shoot in the South Garden?
Requirements can change and vary by group size and whether you’re a museum member, so confirm current policy directly with the Art Institute before your session.
What’s the best time of day to shoot here?
Late afternoon light filters nicely through the trees. Arrive with enough time before the garden’s closing (about 30 minutes ahead of the museum’s own closing time).
Does it work with any wedding style?
Yes. We’ve shot modern, classic, and black-tie weddings here, and the stone and greenery photograph well against all of them.
