The Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel, The Depot, is a historic hotel in downtown Minneapolis housed in the former Milwaukee Road train depot. Built in 1899, the depot fell into disrepair in the 1970s before being restored in the 1990s into a hotel that pairs the building’s original industrial architecture with modern event space. Its atrium spans the length of the original train shed, with soaring ceilings, exposed brick, and natural light pouring in over the floor. As Chicago filmmakers who travel for weddings across the Midwest, we got to film a Twin Cities celebration here.
A Wedding We’ve Filmed at The Depot
On August 21, 2021, Ellie and Matt celebrated with 200 of their closest family and friends in a wedding that captured both sides of the Twin Cities: sacred vows at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in St. Paul, and an industrial-chic reception back at The Depot in Minneapolis.
The morning began in the Depot’s Luce Line Room, where the bridal party got ready with the team from Primped, and where we caught a private father-daughter first look just before the day picked up speed. After the ceremony and portraits across the Twin Cities, the celebration returned to Minneapolis: cocktails in The Shed and Conservatory’s light-filled industrial spaces, then a room reveal before the doors opened on the Great Northern Ballroom, dressed in florals by Sadie’s and linens by Linen Effects. The grand entrance and first dance came courtesy of the Blue Water Kings, and the dance floor stayed packed all night.

The Depot’s mix of exposed brick, soaring ceilings, and abundant natural light in the atrium gives us a lot to work with, both for wide establishing shots and close, intimate coverage. The Great Northern Ballroom is a strong reception space for couples who want an industrial-elegant backdrop without leaving downtown Minneapolis.
